The Festival
This will be the first year since the revived Applejack Festival began that Dr. Neal Gomon will not be around for the celebration.
He was instrumental in getting the old Apple Bowl idea rejuvenated a number of years ago and he looked with pride to the annual event in Nebraska City which pitted his Peru Staters against the Tarkio College football team.
Dr. Gomon died a few weeks ago, but his dedication to the program since his retirement and in the ensuing years has been paramount to the success of the program.
If you've never attended a festival in Nebraska City, then mark Saturday, September 16, on your calendar. On that day 15 or 20 high school bandsmen will march on Central, be judged on music and performance and that evening the two college football teams will play on the new football field west of Senior High in Nebraska City.
Neil Hayhurst is chairman. His committee includes Marv Eaton, Mark Greenway, Ed Sasse, Warren "Cope" Copenhaver and Tom Funke.
From the Oil Jobber
We've come to the point where we are overmechanized. Didya hear the one about the fellow with two telephones, one in the kitchen and an extension upstairs?
The phone rang, two receivers clicked, two voices said, "I've got it."
And then, simultaneously, two people hung up.
Congratulations
to the young people of the Dunbar community for taking matters into their own hands and sprucing up the main street with paint and a whole lot of energy.
The youths didn't like the appearance of the vacated areas so they did something about it. And the comments we've heard said they did it up right and good.
FCA is growing
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the organization that tries to get the most out of athletes spiritually, is growing in Nebraska.
The state publication, The Mark, announced this week that Wendell Conover, Sargent, is the first state FCA director.
FCA was started a number of years ago in Nebraska City and has grown in numbers and popularity, thanks to NCHS Athletic Director Jim Brockhaus and a host of other volunteers.
We've met Wendell and his wife, Marie, and children, Tim and Wendy. As a matter of fact, we solved all the Husker mistakes one Saturday afternoon in Lincoln as we munched pizza.
Best wishes and much success in the new FCA program.
Coming up
The Nebraska City Little Theater will stage "Never Too Late," a situation comedy at the Elks August 11-12-18. The dinner theater caught on a few years ago and has been used by the theater group with a great deal of success.
Tickets are $8 each and they are available at Jessup's and Snodderly's. The play is co-directed by Mrs. Ron Hazard, and Mrs. Bill Zastera.
The cast includes Rhonda Arthur, Dick Schmidt, Mrs. Earl Colbert, Steve Nocita and Tom Neff.
CPR benefits
Congratulations to Mrs. Tom Monaghan and Mrs. Art Kregel on their successful CPR benefit. They sold tickets on a host of handmade articles and raised $430 for the Percival CPR project.
The money will go toward the cost of a recording resuscitator for training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
The money they raised shows the result of a worthwhile benefit. Mrs. Monaghan is particularly close to the CPR training. She attempted to revive her husband after he had a fatal heart attack. She administered CPR until relieved by rescue crews.
