Sam to be rerun

The Sidney rodeo

If you missed the Sidney, Ia., Legionnaires on TV the other night, tune to Channel 7 Sunday at 11:30 p.m. They're going to re-run the program.

The Sidney Legion posts sponsors the annual rodeo and the local veterans get a chance to plug their project with the TV people. The rodeo will be August 8-13.

Sam Kellogg, Jr., of Nebraska City is commander of the post and will be interviewed on the rodeo and the carnival. Sam has served the post a number of years helping with the carnival operation.

Naw, Mary, Sam won't be interviewed at the hootchie-kootchie. Whoopie volunteered.

The flood at Union

The flood at Union was felt by a News-Presser. Tammy Pike, daughter of Mr. and Mis. Thomas Pike, Union, telephoned that flood waters threatened her grandmother Ruth's home. Later, the family watched as eight inches of flood water crept into the home.

It was a mess, Tammy admits, but the family worked to get it cleaned. Tammy is an accounting student at Peru State, and is working full-time this summer at the News-Press in the classified ad and accounting departments.

Farmers Market

Received a clipping and note the other day from a reader who pointed to Omaha's Farmers Market and the hope that Nebraska City could have something like it.

We still have the corner salespeople with their sweet corn, cantaloupes, cucumbers and watermelons, but for the most part the shopping comes off the shelves at the stores in town.

We've never been to the Omaha Farmers Market, but we've visited several of the old-time oriental-operated markets in the Los Angeles area.

Just between you and me I'll take Sam Jaquinta's crop any time.

Coming up

Look out, Pete Rose. Here come the Rotary and Optimist club softball teams.

That match of great talent will be playing a benefit again in a few weeks. Proceeds go to Fort Teen, Nebraska City's youth center.

It's a fun event with a few tricks included to keep them on their toes. They tell me Jim Brockhaus tosses a mean grapefruit and Arvon Marcotte can splatter them with a bat.

Congratulations

to Lori Ruth on her selection as the Fremont County Fair Queen at Sidney, Iowa. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chet Ruth of Percival.

Renee Whipple was first runner-up and Suzanne Heaton was second runner-up.

The Shrine club

The Scimitar Shrine club has sold all its three-wheeled parade vehicles and is looking for another vehicle. The Shriners are responsible for the large following of parade vehicles from the Omaha temple in Nebraska City parades. Without the Shriners and their parade units, Nebraska City's show and tell on Central wouldn't be so large.

Meanwhile the local Scimitar club headed by Kermit Holmes decided to change vehicles. And from what we are told, it could be that the Model T Patrol designation held by the local club for over 20 years will be continued — the Shriners may be parading in the little four wheeled model cars again.

The ace

Doug Ailes, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Garry Ailes, was vacationing a few weeks ago in Big Springs, Nebr., with his grandparents, when he accepted an invitation to play golf with relatives at the sand green course at nearby Julesburg, Colorado. It turned out to be quite an eventful day.

Doug scored a hole-in-one on a 117-yard par 3 hole. He ended the game with a par 36. Pretty foxy for a freshman at Nebraska City Senior High.

School soon

The athletic departments of public and parochial schools are getting ready. Physical exams for boys and girls will be given at NCHS on August 9.

The first football game is Friday, September 1. And that means that good ole' classroom study will begin a week earlier. Vacation is over for the kids. It's back to the books.

The moms and dads can have one, too. "TGSIO" (Thank Goodness Summer Is Over).
