Thanks, firemen

The Smoke

Smoke from a trash fire at our loading dock early the other day will be with us for a time, the experts say.

There is some relief, we learned from ex-fireman Ken Wiles. The Nebraska City Volunteer Fire Department has a scenter device that it loans—for no charge—to rid buildings of the clotting smell of smoke.

Fireman Jerome Keran provided us with the device and we attracted a great deal of attention in the plant when we flipped a switch and a scented vapor spewed from the blower.

Thanks to our janitor, Bob Straw, and all of those great volunteer firemen, for answering our call. Luckily, it was only smoldering paper in a metal container.

The Fair.

We added some new faces to the working staff at the County Fair at Syracuse. Rose-Ellen Lorber joined Mrs. Duffey at the dress revue Sunday night and Vicki Macy got the quick assignment—get pictures of rockets as they lift off.

Vicki is a native of Beatrice and lived and worked in Omaha before joining the news staff at The News-Press. She was impressed with the study and care in which the 4-Hers put into their rocket program.

The ABWA

Thanks to the American Business Women's Association for bringing Kathy Saathoff (Miss Nebraska) to town for a style show and lots of publicity for the town.

Kathy is a graduate of NCHS and was named Miss Nebraska at the pageant in June.

We have been trying since June to get a picture-story on the beauty queen, but because of her schedule she just wasn't available until the appointment was made with the local ABWA.

Additional pictures of the style show and models appear elsewhere in today's News-Press.

Hawaii—49th?

The story the other day said Hawaii was the 50th state. That's true, but that was not the intention of the islanders. We were there.

Signs throughout the islands proclaimed that Hawaii would be the 49th state and celebrations were held each year proclaiming the 49th fair or 49th state sale.

What happened was simply that Congress gave the 49th nod to Alaska and in 1959 crossed the Pacific to embrace Hawaii. Islanders wanted to be next, but Congress and perhaps politics prevailed.

They tell me the island is more crowded with people, but many of the traditions still exist. Sam Kellogg Jr. will be pleased to note that the Tripler Army Hospital located at the base of a mountain is still painted pink.

Good luck, Manns

Our Eagle scout is fleeing the nest.

George Mann of Troop 346 spent a lot of time with his younger charges in their scouting work and now is on his own career and with new company—his bride.

The Manns will be moving to South America to work in a public health program.

Best wishes and much success.

New fuel

The Falls City Journal noted that a team of scientists working with weeds from Arizona and Utah have come up with a paper that says the chemical building blocks extracted from common weeds are every bit as good as those from Iranian crude oil.

"If they ever get around to dandelions, let me know," Bill Schock, editor of the Journal, said.
