Nebraska City

The other day Vern Livingston screened a number of slides and spoke about Nebraska City's development over the years. It was a brief and interesting story as only the gifted Mr. Livingston can tell it.

Much of Vern's story delt with improvements in City Utilities. He was general manager of the organization for many years and holds a great personal pride in its improvements for the town.

It's an interesting 30 minutes about people and places in town. Call him for a program for your club - before he splits for south Texas for the winter.

The contest

The weekly football contest for this week was printed in the Monday paper and next week's was in the Friday, October 20, News-Press.

Deadline to get entries in for next week's contest is October 25. We had to set the printing date ahead because of teachers conventions that week and Wednesday night football games.

Watch the schedules and rots of ruck, as Bill Joseph says.

Congratulations

to Julie Howell, 12, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vilas Howell, on being selected as the Outstanding News-Press Carrier of the Year.

Julie competed against over two dozen other N-P carriers for the award. Her recognition also included a trip to Lincoln for a luncheon with Governor Exon, a picture taking ceremony with the governor and a ticket to the Nebraska - Kansas State football game.

It was quite a day for the little Miss. Circulation Manager Judy Huebner accompanied the winner to Lincoln and while Julie was chumming with the governor, Judy was meeting with other circulation managers from around the state.

Mrs Tait

Mrs. Bertha Tait died last week. We've lost a friend and a regular Safety Valve contributor.

Mrs. Tait left an unwritten legacy, the old need not sit in a rocking chair and watch the world go by.

She was 89, but she had the spunk and determination of fighting City Hall, high taxes or boozers as though she was a spry 39.

Homecoming

Congratulations to NCHS homecoming Queen Norma Beccard and King Jim Eilers and to Syracuse - Dunbar - Avoca Queen Pam Bose and King Brad Kreifels.

This is a big time of the year, socially, for the high schoolers and we enjoy reading about them and the recognition given to them by their classmates.

History

We hope you are enjoying the new Sunday column by Glenn Noble, perhaps one of Nebraska - City's most prolific historians.

Mr. Noble's column, "Nebraska City's History," appears every other Sunday in the News-Press. In it he offers interesting stories about the town and its people of yesteryear.

Last week he featured Col John Boulware who arrived in Nebraska City nearly 10 years before the town was established. Perhaps in the coming weeks, we can twist Mr. Noble's arm to give us some goodies on the non-cussin' Russell - Majors - Waddell freighters.

The good reader

Dawn Bidne, one of the teen-agers in the Marlin Bidne household at Brock says she reads the News-Press and particularly this column. Thank you, Dawn. You're kind.

Dawn is my motor pool partner. She sat on a box or stool or sumthin' in a truck, and while daughter Jeannea slept, Dawn kept up a steady chain of conversation on the 4 or 5 hour night trip.

She is 16 and a sophomore at Johnson - Brock High School and the braces on her teeth are off. Keep smiling, Missy.
