Mr. Ryan

Down on the river there is a fella named Benjamin J. Ryan whose job is shipping commodities on the Missouri river.

This Mr. Ryan is quite a gent. He can cuss a southern drawl streak and he can soothe a conversation like a master toastmaster. He's got a lion's heart when it comes to goodwill and he is probably Nebraska City's best promoter in and out of town.

If the plans of his company, the Sioux City-New Orleans Terminal Corp., jive like Capt. David Parker and Mr. Ryan hope they do, Steinhart Terminal will be much larger in a few short years.

When you approach the terminal and are greeted with a friendly smile and hand grasp by Mr. Ryan, respond with the same tone.

This old world needs a few more folks like the river man.

Congratulations to City Street Commissioner Ervin Rogers and Street Foreman Elmer Howell for providing wider street parking spaces. It's a pleasure now to be able to get in and out of my Rambler without having to crawl between two cars.

I've sworn not to tell this but I jus' gotta. The B. A. in the name of B. A. Johnson, Syracuse bandmaster, means "Basilthoinck sky Alloyuisness" er something like that.

Aw, shucks. Jus' call him "Bud" and be done with it.

Right foot forward.

On the night the Chamber board hired Bob Hegstrom as manager the new man said he had one suggestion he would like to see carried out in Nebraska City. And that was holding weekly "coffee hours" so that businessmen could get together. Bob generated the enthusiasm and sure enough, there will be those talk-it-over periods in the Friendship Room in Otoe County National Bank. Pretty clever, boy.

It might be well to mention here that besides being a golfer and donkey baseball rider the Chamber man also plays the organ.

Take a peek at your driver's license.

Notice in the second line at the top it says, "This license expires September 1, 1963." That's now, friend. We've got 60 days to get the job done.

That space for "fee" will be marked with $3 this year. That's a buck higher than two years ago when we got our licenses.

If you wish, Otoe county Treasurer Orel Williams will handle your driver's license business by mail providing you send her $3, your old license and a self-addressed and stamped envelope.
