"Let's look for another site," Robert Wilson of the Housing Authority said seekingly.

Orville Koch of the county fair association said a new event this year at the annual celebration in Syracuse August 19-20-21-22 will be a tractor pulling contest.

Orville said he does not recall horse pulling contests at the county fairs, an event which at one time was one of the big things at county fairs.

I recall the team of "blacks" owned by a farmer near my home town that were entered in the horse pulling contests each year. I've forgctten how many hands-high the horses were or how much the team weighed. But I do remember the owner talking gently to his team and commanding their strength as they pulled against traces.

And a good team it was that pulled a skid loaded with bags of cement.

It was always quite a thrill to see pure strength lean against a harness and move a skid that an old F-20 had a hard time moving back to the starting line.

The cans were distributed by Nebraska Jaycees at the national convention in Louisville, Kentucky.

A bit unusual - Merle Short, Nebraska City Iron Works, said his crew is making winter tank heaters; Winston Rashleigh, river marshal, is handling truck speeding problems without pay or fines and Ben Ryan's railroad line will not close down, strike or no strike.
