The twister
Chuck Johnson, our plant superintendent, came up with this tongue twister describing one of the jobs in the pressroom by Rein Winkler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Winkler of Dunbar.
The smaller rolls of paper are rewound onto larger rolls and then put onto the press. So, what does he do?
Rein rewinds rolls.
Aw, come on a little faster.
The quartermaster
The new temporary quartermaster of the Nebraska VFW is Bob Bethel of Pawnee City. He will be seeking election to the post at the June convention in Ogallala.
Bob is a retired Navy commander who hung up his dress blues and sports civies as a student at Peru State College. As a matter of fact his whole family is Navy. His wife, Esther, served in the Navy during the Korean War, their son is a submariner and their daughter is married to a sailor.
Bob used good old Navy jargon to describe his first days in taking on the new duty of the VFW. He asked for help from veterans across the state "to reduce the shock of relieving the watch."
Good luck, Steve
A. M. "Steve" Stephenson is in Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., following a bout with diabetes while on a trip to Missouri.
Steve was returned to Nebraska City and the other day was transferred to Mayo's accompanied in the plane by his wife, Helen.
Despite his illness he was in good humor. We had several cure suggestions (mostly unmentionables) but in his usual gruff manner he said go to-you-know-where.
Good health to you, Steve, and a speedy recovery.
The postmaster
Adeline N. Kehlenbeck, the new postmaster at Union, is the wife of the late Henry Kehlenbeck of Syracuse and an aunt of Syracuse Mayor Erv Kehlenbeck.
Mrs. Kehlenbeck has been working for the post office department over 15 years, the last three at the post office in Union.
Proud granddad
John Ehmke has returned after a rewarding visit with his son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Ehmke of Tulsa.
John's grandson, Bradley, 21, graduated from the College of Ozarks at Clarksville, with a bachelor's degree and he hopes to teach. Well, not entirely.
He wants to play any kind of a game, as long as it's baseball.
Brad has been recognized across the state for his ability as a catcher and all-around baseball player. Granddad attended one of the games while on the trip. Two major league scouts were in the bleachers.
John was seated next to his younger grandson and joshed the boy about the players. "They oughta get that catcher out of there," ole' John the Kidder, said.
The fellow behind him thought different and told him so.
John liked that.
Good reading
If you didn't read "Old Drum" in the current Elks magazine, do it.
It's a story of a famous law case in the late 1800's where a man sued another for shooting his hunting dog, Old Drum. The Missouri incident resulted in a closing statement in a courtroom that has been reprinted many times.
If you love dogs, you'll appreciate the story.
