Steak after your teeth are gone

An amazing case.

Guilty

The jury foreman responded to the court. "We find the defendant guilty as charged."

The judge about flipped. He was amazed at the decision and questioned the jurors, "On what possible basis could the jury have arrived at this verdict?"

The jury foreman answered, "Insanity."

The judged looked them over and asked, "All 12 of you?"

The Dunbar Review

Social Security is an old age insurance that guarantees you a steak after your teeth are gone.

According to George, "In this day and age you're likely not to have either the steak or the teeth."

The rec director

Tom Kiritsy's appointment as Nebraska City's recreation director comes at a time when a lot of planning is being done for the spring and summer activities.

Nebraska City started the rec program several years ago under the leadership of Tom Weathers. It grew from a zip to a heavily loaded and scheduled program of sporting events for all age groups, plus many indoor activities for those not particularly interested in sports.

Tom brings to the park department rounded classroom training and on the job qualities as an ex-Marine and a phys ed major at Peru State.

Good [illegible] to Tom.

Football

It may be to some, but we think the Orange Bowl match-up this year is the biggest boo-boo of the football season.

We're talking about the so-called "re-match" between Nebraska and Oklahoma on New Year's night in Miami.

The last we heard was that NU ticket manager Helen Wagner had 20,000 requests and 12,500 tickets for the game. That was before the Huskers bobbled to Missouri and before the Sooners were named to play in the Orange Bowl.

The 4-H camp

You'll be hearing more in the next weeks and months about a fund raising campaign in Otoe county to finish the 4-H camp near Gretna.

County Agent Gary Garey said a group is being organized, a chairman named and a county canvas will get under way. Goal for Otoe county is $20,000.

An estimated $1.5 million is needed to finish the camp. Five cabins are completed and five are under construction. Those cabins, by the way, are designed to handle 10 4-Hers each.

The buildings are on a 40-acre site and the campground totals 287 acres. The 4-Hers in the 24 counties in the district raised $150,000 for the project.

The pulpit

A sermon can do great things for people in different ways. Some can rise from it greatly strengthened and others can awaken from it greatly refreshed.

The fire

The fire loss at the Walter Grantski home at 1609 Third Avenue is felt by the community.

It doesn't matter whether you know the Grantskis. You can still feel the loss because it could happen to your home.

Donations of clothing for the family are being accepted by the Nebraska City Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. Anyone with clothing or other items has been asked to call Mrs. Larry Wiles at 873-5130.

The fair board

Fair goers welcome Jim Peterson, Burr, and John Rudolph, Dunbar, as members of the Otoe County Fair Board.

They were elected to take the places of two longtimers on the board, Dale Bolz, Palmyra, who served 36 years, and Walter Reimer, Syracuse, who has been on the board 26 years.

We join the fair communities in saying thanks to Dale and Walter for their many years of long hours, and no pay. Actually, they will disagree with anyone who says there's no pay — just seeing the young grow and become productive is pay enough.

The orange — peeled.

That cartoon on Page 1 the other day about Robert Prokop squeezing the orange was the result of a cooperative effort by two News-Press employes: Diane Lukowski, a news reporter from Nehawka, came up with the penciled sketches and Tammy Pike, our Peru State student-bookkeeper from Union, did the final drawing.

The girls were told about the news story and given an idea of squeezing the Orange Bowl. They came up with the cartoon idea.
