Crusty and rusty golfers

A second retirement.

Doing something

Sev and Lil Sorensen will do a bit of traveling this summer, and they will be busy with other activities during "retirement."

This is Sev's second retirement. He stepped down at NCHS from the voc ag department, then took the bull by the horns and got a good ag-shop program implemented at NC Lourdes. Now, five years later, he decided to "retire" again.

The only reason we know all this is because the other day we took some of Sev's time to look over some tree problems. We had to interrupt his schedule for a time โ€” he was en route to work on his farm.

The Class of 1907

Thank you, Clara Witte, for the story about your class of 1907. We recognized several names and knew a few of the people, but most of all we became well acquainted with your class, thanks to you.

American Meter

Thank you, American Meter, for inviting us to tour your plant and see how meters are manufactured in Nebraska City. We are all proud of your first 25 years and wish you much success in the future.

Your blood needed

Pat Caswell of the Red Cross blood program, told Optimists the other day that only three percent of the people in this country give blood.

Since the number of donors is so low, science has been forced to find ways to stretch blood and it has been successful. Meanwhile the blood donor program needs some pepping up.

For one thing, the speaker said so many of those in that three percent figure are WWII age. That will cut the number and as a result, the Red Cross is looking for more donors.

It takes only about 45 minutes and you can save a life.

The bloodmobile will be here June 19. Call Wilma McIntire for more information, 873-3481.

Pee Wee Erwin

Newspapers carried a story the other day about George "Pee Wee" Erwin, a famous jazz trumpeter who returned to Falls City to visit his mother, Mrs. Chloe Erwin.

We don't know much about Mr. Erwin, but we know about his horn and his friends. The late Vern Pickering who trumpeted his way through dance halls for nearly 50 years, spoke many times about his friend, Pee Wee.

Pick was a linotype operator at the News-Press in the day and a musician at night. He really loved both jobs and did them well all those years.

A busy park

The Falls City Journal reported that 7,200 people visited Indian Cave State Park during the Memorial Day weekend. Larry Cook, park superintendent estimated 1,272 overnight guests and โ€” no vandalism or unnecessary litter problems.

That wasn't the same in Nebraska City. Vandals shredded the plumbing facilities at the restroom at Riverview park. Craig Bergman reported 1,1[illegible] people toured Arbor Lodge mansion during the same weekend.

Golf lessons

A few years ago, Fred Oetgen was managing the Steinhart golf course and struggling to get a few people to take golf lessons.

Now it's organized. And one of the organizers is Paula Hendrickson, a 4-H aide. Although Paula admits she's not a golfer, she's got the heart and has scheduled lessons in Nebraska City and Syracuse beginning June 19. Your cost โ€” $5.

Teachers are Dick Jensen, Nebraska City and Tom Frech in Syracuse.

Thank you, Paula. There are a few of us crusty and rusty golfers who should be on the beginner list.
