The most beautiful thing we saw on Christmas
Were the smiles of our family around the tree.
The most saddest thing we saw that weekend
Was the poor attendance at church the Sunday following Christmas.
A few excersing buffs are looking anxiously for the arrival of Tom Weathers, the town's new recreation director who will start work in Nebraska City February 1.
"Perhaps we can get some interest going for a facility similar to that at York," one observer said.
A "work-out" and steam room or sauna baths are among the items that have drawn some interest.
Mary Ellen Slack, girls physical education director, has been another of the most interested. She is looking forward to meeting and perhaps working with Mr. Weathers.
Dr. C. C. Case is also looking forward to renewing acquaintances with Mr. Weathers. They were fraternity brothers at Doane college.
New Year's resolution
This is official, now. It's no rinky-dinky situation. The Buck has found it necessary to make New Year's resolutions and stick to 'em.
โ No more of this razzle-dazzle stuff in the morning. I resolve not to change the breakfast menu once Millie has slapped the bacon in the skillet.
โ I resolve not to eat any more sour cream cholocate cake and oatmeal or cream of wheat for breakfast (I retain the right to change that on Sunday mornings).
โ I resolve not to write any more stuff about Ed Hunter that's not true unless dared by his son in law Gary Cullin.
I resolve to absorb the pastor's message every Sunday morning with as much diligence as when reporting an event for the newspaper.
I resolve to keep my cool when discussing drugs and sex education with the younger members of the family who claim there's a generation gap.
I resolve to make Frank Rink smile every time I approach the service window at the post office.
I resolve not to chide the Associated Press staff in Omaha any more that Nebraska City "knows" when Omahans flush their toilets.
I resolve to take my son hunting on New Year's morning but not keep him out too late so he doesn't miss all the bowl games.
I resolve not to report in the newspaper the conversations that take place at the Crooked Coffee Club at the Friendship Room unless egged on by Verne Jones.
I resolve not to tell anyone what Harold Halm thinks will be the outcome of the Nebraska Alabama game.
I read the other day.
About the mini-skirted office girl who wanted a modesty panel attached to her desk. The purchasing department obliged with plexiglass.
Mrs. Ben Kohout called to say that her son, Chris, and his family have gone to Corpus Christi, Tex., where the Navy pilot will be stationed.
Chris is a lieutenant (j.g.) and for you land lubbers that means in good ole' navy savy that he is a "junior grade" officer and his rank is comparable to that of a first lieutenant with other branches of service.
Officers of Chris' rank are called "j.g.'s." However, Navy protocol requires that the pilots be addressed as, "Lieutenant" Kohout.
How's that bit of lingo grab you? We ole' sailors gotta stick together.
