A super-dooper-pooper BB gun

We joined the visitors to Dr. M.B. DeJarnette's home the other night to look over his gun collection.

Our house has a gun cabinet, but it houses only a couple weapons (and naturally, a super-dooper-pooper BB gun) so it was a sight to behold as we stepped into the gun room at the doctor's home.

The State Historical Society calls his collection one of the finest in the U.S. And surely that authority knows something about historical collections. I don't and never intend to be an authority on anything.

But I do have an appreciation of others who have such interesting hobbies. And I admire the beauty and handiwork of tooled guns.

Doctor DeJarnette said it is a sad day to give up his collection, but then he adds, that he has had it beginning 60 years ago and he has no use for it now.

His late wife, Todde, shared his interest.

Marijuana or "grass" may be closer than we think. Not only is this area a harvest haven for marijuana, but it is also smoked here, some people say.

We've heard that dozens of times, but as yet have never known it for sure.

But didya know:

That grass is available in 20-pack wrappings or in loose form (apparently like the old Bull Durham bags) and that it is used as a form of getting boozed up without getting sick?

Didya know also that marijuana was available in leaf form packed neatly in Prince-Albert cans . . . 35 years ago in the central part of Nebraska?

Up on the North 40.

Mayor Louie Genoa has been approached by the North 40 Vigilantes on whether to annex Northside school or build another . . . seems the population includes school people such as Superintendent Jim Withee, Junior High Principal Doug Dickerson and understand Elementary Principal Jerry Jacobson will hear up our way.

Note to D.W. Kicker — We can tell by the morning ground fog that frost will hit the "hill" before the downtowners get it so you better get out those red five-buckle overshoes.

The Virg Pitsticks of Hansville, Wash., will be "home" in Nebraska City late this month and "we'll be open for business October 1," Virg said in a letter asking that an ad be inserted in the paper.

"We have enjoyed a beautiful, but short, summer here in the northwest and have appreciated the visits of serveral Nebraska Citians."

The travelers tell me that Virg still keeps up the same pace and has a dozen projects going at one time.

Understand the VFW is considering relocating its post home on South Eleventh street, moving from its present location north on U.S. 75.

One of the nice things about being in the printing business, we can dig something out of a drawer and read what happened.

That was the occasion when my desk drawer fell on the floor and the junk scattered about. There was that attractive folder: "The Nebraska City Junior Chamber of Commerce BEAUTY PAGEANT".

It was held April 24, 1957 at the Armory. Candidates were Marilyn Ahrens, Genene Brandt, Nancy DeLong, Ardith Ehlers, Wanda Head, Marlene Hutton, Ruth Janssen and Carla Wademan. Miss Brandt was selected as Miss Nebraska City.

W.R. "Bill" Yates, was president of the Jaycees. He was manager of the former American Loan here, now the AVCO firm.

The committee was Vaughn Hickman, Deryle Seefus, Roger McCreary, Bill Gangel, Bus Wymore, Bill Dawson, Les Beames, Kenneth Walker, Bill Schulz, Mary Porter, Mrs. Dean Twidell, Ted Granger, Fred Rebstock and Forest Gaskill.

Marine Lance Corporal Dana Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Davis, is stationed five miles north of DaNang in Vietnam and he's looking forward to civilian life.

We know Dana pretty well here. He worked in our mail room during high school years. And we've tried to follow him since graduation from Senior High. He enlisted into the Marines, was accepted into a school for repair of office machines, was stationed in California and now in Vietnam.

Dana's dad was also a lance corporal and served in the Corps in office machine repair.

Dana's not alone in Vietnam. He's met and chummed with Lance Cpl. Ron Sudman, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Sudman, Nebraska City. The boys have got together several times and if they are like all good GI's, they painted the town red.
