The kids really want to go

Omaha finally got a conviction on its obscenity law passed over two months ago. The case involved the sale of literature to teenagers under 18.

The law also prohibits admitting children under 18 to movies identified with "adults only."

That's when the kids really want to go.

Although many movies are a bit on the raunchy side, theaterowners are not all to blame. The box office pretty much dictates what people like.

And when something like "The Love Bug" comes along, it's mighty refreshing to read of the record box office business.

I didn't see "Romeo And Juliet," but I can report what the teenagers said:

"I liked it."

"It was beautiful."

"It made me cry."

But I did see "Valley of the Dolls," a movie many called "dirty."

I didn't think it was. The theme song is one of my favorites now that I know what it was all about.

The early movie the other night on TV whicl starred Joan Crawford in a story about a blind and deaf mute, also had its moments of questionable nature.

The rape scene may not have been in the best tastes for living room audiences of all ages. And yet, how do you grade something like that?

"Grandfather" A. M. Stephenson had to pay off a bet.

He wagered that his grandson, Bill Stephenson, son of the Bob Stephensons of Mexico, Mo.[illegible]d not drive to Nebras[illegible] City without three repair stops on his homemade car.

Grandson Bill arrived to collect. And we understand that granddad, the paymaster, came through with his part.

This weekend the story of Michelangelo will be shown on TV starring Charleton Heston. I saw the film at the Pioneer some time ago. The man was a genius. And the story of the painting of the Sistine Chapel stirs the imagination.

We decided in a family discussion the other day that the reason he was so great was because in those times, art was bread and butter and an element in society.

Wonder how this century will be remembered most.

I think it will be a combination of music, space exploration and construction.

The space odyssey we've witnessed probably will come to a major slowdown and soon . . . and rightly so. We've fulfilled the pledge of an assassinated president to land men on the moon in the 1960's.

Now let's put some of that space energy and dollars into programs such as slum and ghetto cleanup, air and water pollution and dozens of other earth problems.

The girls softball season had ended. And thanks goes to the many mothers for their coaching assignments to give the girls some sporting activity.

Sometimes the girls are slighted in the light of the baseball programs for boys. Congratulations to the Jaycees and Mr. and Mrs. Don Sherrill and others for their leadership.
