Wonder if you got the same letter I did.
It was from a sewing machine company offering prizes in its special "number" contest.
By george! I had the grand prize number.
The paragraph on the next page said I was chosen (by chance, naturally) as the grand prize winnr.
Hot diggety dog! What a Christmas this is going to be!
Well, it all went down the drain in the next couple of lines whi[illegible]h told that all I had to do was sign a five - year contract which would guarantee just about everything on the machine as sort of a "nothing can go wrong . . . nothing can go wrong."
The five-year contract asked only $1 a month . . . for 12 months . . . for five years.
The next letter I opened was from a magazine company which said my subscription had about expired (I was sure it was paid up three years ahead of time on another "special") and included the fanciest printing of what looked like a sure-fire hell-blazing bond, gold seal and the bright blue postage paid envelope.
It's the tragic truth.
Duane Pope killed three people in a bank robbery at Big Springs, Nebr., and Friday was sentenced to life in prison.
Thomas Alvarez is scheduled to die in the electric chair in March on conviction of the rape-murder of a Lincoln housewife. It's doubtful the sentence will be carried out.
Killers get life sentences and Alvarez is no different in the twisted thinking of the 20th Century.
Alan Stubbendick, Avoca and Roger Ross, Otoe, who just returned from the annual NFO convention in St. Louis, said a step-up is coming in Otoe county NFO activities.
Much of the NFO's problem, they said, is doing a good job of informing the farmer of what the NFO hopes to accomplish.
Legionnaires of Adam Schellinger Post No. 8 will toot their horn next spring on their 50th birthday. Legion Commander Chas. J. Gude Jr., has appointed a committee to plan the event which will probably honor those 50-year charter members.
To help "put it over" historical data is needed on Adam Schellinger Post No. 8. If you have any helpful information you can give it to the committee of Earl Story, Ray Duncan, Andrew Kreifels, Ray Frerichs, Jesse Parker, Paul Niemann and myself or mail it to the Legion post in Nebraska City.
Your help will be much appreciated by the veterans.
