About the most exciting thing to happen in town in recent years apparently was the visit last weekend of the motorcycle group.
Traffic along Fourth Corso at the east edge of town was jammed bumper to bumper as the curious looked over the bearded and dungaree-clad group from Minnesota.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom West who operate the drive-in along Fourth Corso were swamped with business, a single order at a time, for the 38 cyclists and their car and truck caravan.
If you didn't learn anything that day, you found out that a "sissy bar" is chromed metal looped over the back of the seat on a motorcycle and a maltese cross is an eight-pointed design.
Incidently, Mrs. West is trying to locate someone dressed in a yellow shirt who took pictures at a particular time at the drive-in. She'd like to buy a picture.
The News-Press story said the other day that a convicted slayer from Wilber, Nebr., would have another chance to plead for parole at the state pen.
I remember the case well. The man walked into the Foxhole Tavern and gunned down the couple.
I was working late that night at the newspaper and had just locked the building and started for the car when the action broke loose.
The man shot the two people, went home and waited until the sheriff came for him. The arrest was so quick, it was some time before we felt the impact of the horror of what had happened.
Congratulations to the park board and City commission for the armor coating at Steinhart park, plus the soon-to-be hard-surfaced Memorial Building parking lot.
Public officials are to be commended for recognizing the need for the improvements and getting them done.
Look for street improvement on a planned program. City Street Commissioner Clyde Stoll has asked for recommendations on where to start first with the hopes of a two-year program in the mill.
If Mrs. Bucher, wife of the commander of the U.S.S. Pueblo, has her way, then Americans will have another slogan, hopefully as prominent as "Remember Pearl Harbor."
Mrs. Bucher's slogan is "Remember the Pueblo." She's in Omaha hopefully gaining support to get those 82 men released from the North Koreans.
The sad thing about life is that while people don't always forget, the next generation just doesn't know.
Mix 'em together, then answere these:
Who was Nation Hale? Colin Kelly? How about Harper's Bazaar? Ernie Pyle?
Know what the largest sport is in Nebraska City?
Bowling.
There are teams and leagues already formed or being organized to include just about every sporting age group. It's nothing new; Nebraska City has had such a program for a number of years under the guidance of Virg and Velma Miller.
There's a whole evening's entertainment at V-Lanes complete with a snack bar and bowling equipment. Virg and Velma also have a machine and the skill to fit a ball to the exact size of your hand.
As you've noticed by the number of stories in past days, Otoe county 4-Her's returned with many top awards from the State Fair.
Congratulations to the winners and to the Otoe county extension staff, county fair officials, and 4-H leaders and advisers for a successful 1968.
