Otoe county farmers with lakes and ponds on their farms are looking more and more to the skies for rain.
Johnny Bando's attractive pond along No. 2 west of Nebraska City will have to be dredged out to put it back in shape after the dry spell.
And Lester Hohnroth, who farms south of Bando and who has a 23-acre lake, is still waiting for enough rain for the first fill.
A picture will be printed soon in the News-Press of the two headed Hereford calf (or calves) mounted by taxidermist Joe Voges.
Joe is pretty proud of the finished mounting. Taxidermy is a skill all its own of plaster, paint and color matching and Joe has certainly applied his talents to the calf.
He's pleased that Lipton Tea purchased his cabins and store because now instead of a spare-time vocation in taxidermy, he is doing what he loves most.
He's got quite a display of his efforts. You might even get a kick out of his American Jackelope.
The steward for the Whitehead Speedway was in the town the other day to help set up the August 4 race. Bill Jordan of Beatrice will work with Richard Whitehead and his father, Raymond, then drive to Beatrice for the night races.
Wonder if Merle Short and his "White Lightning" and me and "Twiggy" ought to volunteer to be the pace cars. "Short" will surely have to pull his glasses off his forehead and put out his cigar to make those high-banked curves . . . but I betcha he could do it.
Everytime I think about car races, I think about Bill Cosby who appeared on the Johnny Carson Commercials and Cosby's imitation of racing the engine [illegible]f the Jag in a parking lot.
Best wishes to the Whiteheads for a successful season.
There were a few bowed heads when a state official said the Nebraska City post office will be preserved for historical sake.
There are people in town who would like to see a new post office like every other town in the nation seems to be getting.
I'll take anything to improve and build the town.
The same applies to a new swimming pool.
If we need it, let's get it.
On the question of a rectangular pool or the flying saucer, I don't give a hoot. Build it to accommodate the most people.
Indoor pool?
Yup.
You won't catch me swimming in January, but I think the school kids would and surely the exercise would be good for them.
Wonder if Athletic Director Jim Brockhaus and Girls Phys Ed Director Mary Ellen Slack agree?
I was pleased to read the City commission cut the tax levy and the school board's money request will likely result in a lower school tax levy.
They are to be commended. Prudence, is always appreciated while spending the other man's money.
