Dur[illegible] a four year hitch the N[illegible] we got used to bel[illegible] [illegible] and [illegible] [illegible]reamin[illegible] of all kinds but the most feare[illegible] aboard any Navy vessel w[illegible] the f[illegible] [illegible].
F[illegible] can destroy a ship [illegible] sound and f[illegible] fighting was a necessity.

The nicest sound was [illegible] fire [illegible] and moments later [illegible] [illegible] from people w[illegible] know what to do.
There is a bit of irony in the story and that comes from the thoughtfulness of F[illegible] D[illegible]ey, manager of Montgomery Ward and company in Nebraska City.
Mr. Duffey was in the job shop department [illegible] be[illegible]fore the fire was d[illegible].
He came to pick up [illegible] material and as [illegible] p[illegible] by the moderat[illegible] he [illegible] the door was not closed [illegible]. The thought passed as he [illegible] [illegible]ng waited on.
After he d[illegible] [illegible] thought returned [illegible] [illegible]ed the News Press office [illegible] about the [illegible].

And then there was the story of Bill Conley and Harley Rakes who went mushroom hunting. They separated. Bill returned, but Harley didn't.
So, ole' Sheriffey Ralph Hall drove the river bottoms south of Nebraska City with his siren blaring away. About 11 p.m. Harley found his way to the siren and comfort of the auto . . . soaked that he was from the rain.
WHAT HAPPENED to the mushrooms?
