Kinda persnickity about smoking habits

The Nebraska City Saddle club is giving serious thought to opening an amateur horse race track in the area.

A good idea!

Nebraska Citians are sports-minded and they are supporters of the Saddle club's shows.

Wonder if I could set up a gambling joint and make a mint?

Up on the north 40.

The snow fence is up, but as yet we haven't had any northers to bury us.

New neighbors are Mr. and Mrs. Deroy Harshman. Mrs. Harshman is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Heng and a sister of Mrs. Harold LeGrande, our next door neighbor.

The cigaret-cancer stories are getting to me. I'm going to quit cigaret smoking and stay with pipes although I don't consider myself one of the cancer "heavy" smokers. I smoke about 15 cigarets a day.

I read the other day that pipe smokers live longer, so since I enjoy tobacco, I'm not going to quit altogether . . . just fags or cancer sticks as some call 'em. I'm fond of one particular make of pipe and since 1953, I've accumulated three. Two were given me by my family and one by a friend eight years ago.

Wonder why people smoke in the first place.

No law should ever be enacted banning tobacco. That would be like a law against liquor and history has recorded what happened in the years when booze was illegal. Perhaps you have read about the glue-sniffers. The News-Press would have some difficulty doing a dozen and one jobs without glue if it was agin' the law. Spit sure wouldn't hold anything.

During a hitch in the Navy it seemed like everyone aboard ship was smoking a pipe, cigar or cigaret while standing in the chow line at 6 a.m.

That's when I quit smoking early in the morning. That was 13 years ago and I still don't smoke early in the morning.

As a matter of fact, I'm kinda persnickity about smoking habits.

—I prefer one brand, a filter type; don't smoke early in the morning; never inhale the first puff when lighting up and never smoke while lying down.

I've often thought about pipe smoking on the job, but find that it would be inconvenient at times. Someday perhaps Clyde Hatten or Dr. R. C. Fenstermacher can tell me why they smoke pipes and whether they find them inconvenient except when resting.
