Seat belts installed in the flivver

Despite widespread publicity given the importance of seat belts in cars, the promotion will never really be successful until fun loving Americans are forced by law to install belts.

One of the freedoms Americans cherish is telling anyone who comes up with an idea — which may be for our own good — to go to blazes.

You couldn't get a jet pilot to land his aircraft without shoulder straps and seat belts. He knows how important those straps are to his safety. The same applies to race car drivers. They know.

But the average petrol burning driver on highways doesn't want to fool with belts, unless he has a particular interest in safety.

The seat belt clinic will be Sunday, at the Hinky Dinky parking lot. Each belt costs $6 installed. You can't pin down the date and place you might need safety belts any more than you can name the date you are going to have an accident.

It seems reasonable then, to assume that a driver and his passengers must always be ready. You may install seat belts and drive the rest of your life and never have an accident but then you just don't know.

It might be good advice to ask the fellow that has them, then decide for yourself.

Once again vacation time is approaching for our family. Last year we painted the house. This year we are going to visit relatives in New York City and visit Washington, D.C. It'll be a whirlwind trip from the last of this month and for about two weeks in August, but our family enjoys traveling.

Oh yes, we are having four seat belts installed in the flivver.

Becci, seven-year-old daughter of Mayor and Mrs. Bill V. Dawson, when asked what her daddy does as Mayor of Nebraska City, said:

"I don't know. He just comes home later at nights."

George Rowe is too modest to admit this but the Steam Wagon celebration to be held Sunday at John Brown park was initiated by him with the assistance of Glenn Noble.

That observance will be well worth attending. Understand that huge old time threshing machine on the property owned by Calvin Wilhelm will be taken out of the building and fired up for the celebration.

As a contrast Nebraska City implement dealers will display modern farm machinery. It ought to be a fine exposition. Machinery will be located on the south side of No. 2.

Better plan on a busy Sunday. It will be Sabin Oral Sunday when for 25 cents you can get anti-polio vaccine on a sugar cube, it will be safety belt day and it will also be a big day with the Steam Wagon events.

Better take along a fried chicken dinner and have a family picnic at one of the city parks.
